Editorial Overview
Though women are indeed welcome inside this small Tompkins Square Park adjacent storefront, Velvet Cigar Lounge feels like a miniature upscale gentleman's lounge tucked away on a quiet East Village block: Rich mahogany paneling and gleaming dark brown humidors adorn the brick walls (some of which serve double duty as personal cigar lockers), the bar is lined with supple maroon leather imitating ostrich skin, and a small flat screen TV hangs above the bar broadcasting the latest sports match. The mostly male patrons unwind in cushy leather chairs or grab a seat at the brown mosaic topped bar, where they become fast friends with each other by discussing the game, business, or most importantly, cigars. Velvet Cigar Lounge may have a bygone formality to it, but it actually permeates with a welcoming and friendly neighborhood vibe that overshadows the distinct aroma of cigar smoke. Even if you're a cigar novice, the staff will treat you just as one of the regulars, and will be happy to thoroughly guide you in creating a perfectly tailored cigar and wine or beer pairing. The establishment also serves as a boutique, so you're encouraged to take home a few of what you sample, or try something new. |
